Citation
A citation in AI search is when an AI-generated response references a specific URL as a source. Citations appear as inline links or footnotes within the AI's answer, directing users to the original content that informed the response.
How AI Citations Work
When an AI search engine generates a response, it retrieves information from multiple sources and synthesizes it into a coherent answer. Citations are the mechanism by which the AI attributes specific claims or information to their source URLs. Different AI engines handle citations differently — Perplexity uses numbered footnotes, Google AI Overviews use inline links, and ChatGPT Search uses source cards — but all serve the same purpose of providing attribution and enabling users to verify information.
Why Citations Are the New Rankings
In traditional SEO, ranking on page one of search results was the primary goal. In AI search, earning citations is the equivalent metric. A citation means the AI engine found your content authoritative and relevant enough to reference as a source. Since AI responses typically cite only 3-8 sources per query (compared to 10 organic results on a traditional SERP), earning a citation represents a significant competitive advantage.
