Defining Share of Voice for AI Search
In traditional marketing, share of voice measures the percentage of total advertising or media mentions that belong to your brand. In AI search, the concept adapts naturally:
AI share of voice is the percentage of relevant AI-generated responses that mention or cite your brand, relative to the total mentions across all tracked brands for the same set of queries.
The formula:
Your SoV = (Your brand mentions across all tracked queries) ÷ (Total brand mentions across all tracked brands for those queries) × 100
For example, if you track 100 queries and the results across all platforms show: Your brand mentioned 25 times, Competitor A mentioned 35 times, Competitor B mentioned 20 times, Competitor C mentioned 15 times, Other brands mentioned 30 times — total mentions: 125. Your SoV: 25 ÷ 125 = 20%.
Why SoV Matters More in AI Search Than Traditional Search
In traditional search, competitors are visible on the same results page — the user can compare and choose. In AI search, the AI makes the selection. If the AI mentions three brands and yours isn't one of them, you're invisible for that query. There's no "page two" to scroll to.
This makes SoV in AI search a more direct measure of competitive opportunity and risk than traditional search visibility. A 20% SoV means competitors are capturing 80% of AI recommendation opportunities for your target queries.
Setting Up SoV Measurement
Define your competitive set. Select the brands you'll track alongside your own. Include direct competitors (brands offering the same product or service), aspirational competitors (larger brands or market leaders you compete against for AI visibility), and adjacent competitors (brands in related categories that AI engines might recommend as alternatives). Typically, track three to seven competitors.
Define your query categories. Segment your query universe into categories that align with your business: product/category queries ("Best [product category]," "[category] tools"), use case queries ("How to [accomplish task]"), problem queries ("Why [problem]," "how to fix [problem]"), and brand queries ("[Your brand] vs [competitor]," "[brand] alternatives").
SoV segmented by category reveals where you're strong and where you're weak. You might have 40% SoV for product queries but only 10% for use case queries — a clear signal of where to focus content efforts.
Calculate at multiple levels. Overall SoV — your total share across all queries and platforms (the headline metric for stakeholder reporting). Platform SoV — your share on each AI platform separately. Category SoV — your share within each query category. Trend SoV — how your share changes over time.
Using SoV Data Strategically
Identify high-value gaps. If Competitor A has 40% SoV on product comparison queries and you have 10%, that's a high-value gap. Analyze what content Competitor A has that gets them cited. Create better content targeting those same queries.
Benchmark content investments. SoV provides a clear before-and-after metric for content campaigns. "We published a comprehensive comparison guide and our SoV for product comparison queries increased from 10% to 22% over three months" is a compelling ROI story.
Detect competitive threats early. If a competitor's SoV is increasing month over month, they're investing in GEO. Investigating what they're publishing and how they're optimizing gives you early warning to respond.
Allocate resources. SoV data reveals where incremental investment will have the most impact. A category where you have 5% SoV and competitors have fragmented shares (no dominant player) is a land-grab opportunity. A category where one competitor has 60% SoV requires a different strategy.
SoV Benchmarks and Targets
There aren't universal SoV benchmarks yet — the field is too new. But you can set targets based on your competitive position:
Market leader target: 30–50% SoV. If you're the category leader, aim to be mentioned in one-third to one-half of relevant AI responses.
Strong challenger target: 15–30% SoV. If you're a well-known alternative, aim for consistent presence as a recommended option.
Growth brand target: 5–15% SoV. If you're newer or smaller, focus on building presence in specific query categories where you can win.
Entry target: >0% SoV. If you're currently invisible in AI search, the first goal is simply to appear. Any presence beats zero.
Track monthly improvement rather than absolute numbers. A brand moving from 5% to 12% SoV in a quarter is making significant progress regardless of the absolute numbers.
